Commitment to Renewable Energy
At Alternatives, we see the use of renewable energy as a way to give back to the community. Our green renovation of the Whitin Mill earned LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Designation from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Alternatives’ Whitin Mill complex draws energy from hydropower, solar power, and power from geothermal heat exchange. Approximately 88% of the Mill’s energy needs are generated on site, including 100% of heating and cooling needs – making it largely self-sufficient!
“Thinking green” has become part of the agency’s organizational culture. Green efforts include recycling, using energy efficient lighting in programs, and a Green Committee that has been formed to continuously promote environmental responsibility across Alternatives’ geographic footprint.
“A nonprofit has to be accountable and efficient with all of its resources, including the environment.”
– Dennis Rice, Executive Director
