Luke Knowles

Community Profile

A lot can happen in a year. Just ask Luke Knowles.

It all began with an opportunity Alternatives’ staff discovered through the organization’s Greater Milford Advisory Council, a group of volunteers dedicated to building awareness and community connections. Jeff Batta, one of the Advisory Council members, was looking for a reliable employee to fill a part-time office position at his car dealership. He needed someone professional and detail oriented. A people person would be a plus. Naturally, Luke came to mind. He was looking for employment, something that his illness had often prevented him from attaining.

Working at Marlborough Nissan was the kick-start Luke needed to set him on a path toward independence. He had a steady paycheck for the first time which enabled him to buy a car and support himself in his own apartment. He was gaining valuable work experience that motivated him to return to school part-time. Like work, his illness had curtailed his pursuit of higher education.

The opportunity Jeff gave Luke was a stepping stone. Luke has moved on from Marlborough Nissan, and today has a job as a peer support worker, helping others like him navigate their journeys through recovery. Making a difference never felt so good.
