Jim has a lot to be proud of. With support from Alternatives’ mental health services, he’s living successfully in his own apartment in Gardner. He holds not one, but two jobs. And, after a long struggle with alcoholism, he’s been sober for 3 and a half years! What an accomplishment.
As Jim explains, stopping drinking helped open doors for him that his illness and alcohol addiction had shut long before. But to walk through those doors, he still had to overcome some challenges – like the fact that he hadn’t worked in 8 years.
Fortunately, Jim’s Employment and Community Connector from Alternatives had some good relationships with area businesses. Two years ago, she found him a part-time maintenance position at a nursing home in Gardner. Six months later, she helped him add another part-time job to his schedule – this one in the maintenance department at Walmart in Leominster.
Jim looks forward to going to work. In particular, he enjoys his colleagues at Walmart and the fact that his job provides lots a variety – perfect for a guy who likes to be on the go! The store’s hiring manager is certainly pleased to have him. “Jim is so reliable and gets along with everyone,” she explains. “There’s nothing else to say but that he’s great!”
We are all so impressed by Jim. Because of all he’s accomplished he was recently asked to share his story with other individuals we serve attending an Employment Exploration workshop. He is, after all, a wonderful role model.
